The mission of Vital Flight is "To coordinate free air transportation for individuals with compassionate, humanitarian or medical needs."
FAA instrument rated and licensed pilots, with thousands of hours of air time, volunteer their time and donate the cost of the aircraft, aviation fuel and all expenses to transport passengers to attend medical or rehabilitation appointments. It might be for chemo therapy at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, or the Blind Veterans Rehabilitation Center at the WPB VA Hospital, Stuart, or disaster relief in the Bahamas.
Pilots are assisted by ground crew volunteers who support the preflight and postflight coordination, all at no charge to those seeking assistance. Our members are all volunteers. No one in Vital Flight is paid a salary or stipend.
We do not charge the patient/passengers or the service facilities/providers, and there are no insurance claims filed. The service is 100% free and supported by whatever donated funds we are fortunate enough to receive. While there is no paid staff, there are overhead costs that include mission scheduling, outreach and pilot recruitment.
